Can cat diseases be transfered to my house cat if i touched a stray cat?

Lisa asked:

I think the cat might have been sick or something because it lost patches of fur. I forgot to wash my hands after and then i pet my cat. I didnt touch either my house cat or the stray cat’s saliva, so i don’t think i can give my cat rabies. But can other diseases be transfered by touch?
this was only a few days ago, and my cat isn’t showing symptoms. if i take him to the vet then what can he do?

Most definitely! If you ever handle a strange cat, be sure to wash your hands before handling your own cat! Even if you didn’t directly touch the saliva, don’t forget cats clean themselves with their tongues! The saliva is still on the fur, even if you can’t see or feel it, and it’s better to be safe then sorry! Lots of cat diseases like Feline Leukemia are HIGHLY contagious and can easily be transferred to cats via handling. Tara

Yes it you could but most likely not if your cat is healthy and up to date on its shots. You can transmit ring worm and things like that. The only other thing I can think of is that you could transmit is the germs to cause an UR. But again if you cat is healthy you should be fine.

Touch can transfer ringworm, possibly mange (skin mites), fleas may have jumped to you for transfer possibly as well, but the only ‘disease’ capable of being moved from one to another is an upper respiratory infection and feline distemper. If your cat is vaccinated against distemper this is not an issue. If he doesn’t sniff or sneeze in 4 days, there’s not a problem either.

Most of the time there’s not going to be any transfer of things that make the fur come off, so if yours is fine now, it’s ok. Elaine M
