Cats and Kittens

I have a 10 week old Golden Retriever puppy and a 7-year old cat. Unfortunately, the puppy seems to think the cat is a play-mate or a toy, and matters are made worse by the fact that the cat runs every time the puppy comes after her with tail wagging. Of course, that means the chase is on! I’ve tried scolding the puppy, “leave it”, keeping them separated, and even scaring the puppy with a shaker can. All of those methods work for a second or two, but as soon as kitty catches the puppy’s eye again, off they go with me trailing after them. I never leave them loose in the same room unsupervised, but the damage appears to have been done. My puppy just seems to think the cat is something to chase, which my cat does not appreciate at all. Any suggestions as to how I can get my puppy to stop chasing the cat?

I have a 9 week old puppy. And he wants to get along with the cats, and i don’t want to ruin that. She plays too rough which is no fair to the cats, she bites them and runs around them in circles barking. But she bends down in the play position and is wagging her tail. The cats aren’t super fond of this so they bat at her and hiss. When the cats get up to run away she chases them. I know she just wants to play but i have to yell at her in fairness to the cats. Any tips on how to make this better?

-Can a cat smell something and be able to remember that smell if they need to find it?
-Can a cat pick up a scent in the air and be able to follow it?
-Can a cat sniff out other cats if they are hiding?

I know a pretty good amount about cats but I don’t know about this.

I am afraid that a new dog might beat up my old cat?

How do I find out if the new dog will get along with my existing cats or not? I want them to be one big happy family. Is there a way to test this? Are certain breads of dogs more likely to get along with cats than others?
