I would keep them in the house for a while when you first move so they can figure out you live there now. Let them get used to it. Otherwise they might try to go back to your old house! HAHA! Rachel

no, cats are very good with direction. but if u havent seen them for a few hrs and they usually are home by that time, call for them. they have very good hearing. Lotsof_questions

Keep them inside for a week or so and buy those tag things or i.d. tubes (that are alot cheaper) to put on their collar, so even if they do go walkabouts, someone will ring you to pick them up. They shouldn’t do though as long as they have the same things like beds and toys and stuff. It’s just incase sh231193

you have to keep them in your house for 6-8 weeks so they can get used to the smell. if u let them out too early they might try to go back to your old house. marisac_rocks

when ever we move we keep the cats inside for at least a week or longer to get used to the new surroundings and new smells, once they feel that this is their new home and territory they will not run away, cats don’t usually get lost, just make sure they have a collar with your updated contact details. googalyfrog

Cats aren’t as stupid as many are portraying them to be. I have never lost a cat due to a move. You might try a trick to keep them from running off right away when they go outside, stick their paws in some water so they will clean them or give them some food, it gives them more time to take in their surroundings. When you move, you’ll need the cats to stay indoors all the time for at least two months. Then let them outside only on leashes for another two months. I don’t approve of ‘indoor/outdoor’ cats, but if you insist on letting them out, please be aware that even after four months of close supervision, they may decide to take off and try to go back to your old place, no matter how far away that may be. The could end up getting run over or killed by another animal, so plan carefully, and be careful when you do let them go outside. Call them after five minutes the first time, ten the second, etc. until you are secure that they’ll stay near your new home all the time. Kris L

No I don’t think so. Cats are good with that kind of stuff. They remember where home is. It’s not like when you first let them out, they’ll dart off and never come back. My best bet would be they would be cautious and slow sniffing everything to get to know their new surroundings Indago P

When I moved to some new apartments someone stole my cat after the first day(I know thats weird), and it came back by itself 2 weeks later, with a flea collar attached and he didnt look skinny so someone must of had him. I remember I was in my living room and I heard scratching on my door, Cats are smart! Aaron M

You could get a leash and walk your cats around the neighborhood and walk them all around and back to your house so they know their way back. Do this a few times.
That’s how my cat got into my neighbor’s garage. She thought that the neighbor’s garage was ours. Silly kitty! Mari S

Well, i would probably keep them inside for a few days or weeks. You should still take them outside so that they get used to their new environment. After a while you could let them out and see how they react. Just start letting them out slowly and soon enough they will be able to go out all the time. Hope this advice helps! live-laugh-love

yes… they have to get to know the neighborhood like a kid does a little at a time
I would take them out supervised for short times …
but keep them indoors most of the time. eyJude

This is what my friend did….She kept her cat indooors to get used to things for a week or two then she used a leash and took her outside and then let her an indoor outdoor cat
Also cats probably won’t wander far so that they will get lost, they know who feeds them and if your cat does get lost shake his food real loud and he’ll come back ~Em&Em~
