Well, I have 3 dogs and 1 cat. When i brought my dogs home (cat was already there) I introduced them to one another and let them know they were now family members and couldn't eat oneanother.
Don't worry about the dog beating up the cat....that wont happen trust me. My cat to this day rules over the dogs and they all play and get along fine.

i had a adorable dog and and a cat, they grew up together so they got along very well,,,in that case your new pup can easly get along with your cat cause they might think its a puupy too, but its hard to get along a kitty to an old dog,,and your new pup might just play play with your cats, treating them as a toy, just like my dog and cat, they sleep together at night my cat lying her head on my dogs belly.they look so cute and everytime i go out with my dog my cat is on our fence waiting for us to comeback,,,keep it up and youll be amazed,.,

If the dog is a pup, I'd be more concerned with the Pup's safety than I would the cat's. TRUST ME, cats can handle themselves around ANY dog. I've had great big Huskies bow down to little ol ally cats, either because the Cat could hiss and scratch loud enough, OR because a cat can SCAT in a hurry if need be. Introduce them, see what happens. That's all you can do. If they grow up together, they'll be friends. It's obviously better if the cat is older and the dog is younger. But there's ALWAYS a chance they'll go their seperate(natural) ways in the long run. They only know what you teach them though too. Just try it....

I wouldn't bring in a DOG ... a puppy would adjust to the cats .. a full grown dog could be a problem.
