How can I tell if two cats are mating or fighting?

Karen V asked:

My tomcat and another cat were just out on my yard yowling at eachother and walking around. How do you tell if two cats are getting ready to mate, as opposed to just angry at each other?

See if they have a cigarette afterwards…

When they are fighting, one usually wiggles its behind; ready to pounce the other cat.

When cats mate the male gets ontop of the female and will bite the scruff of her neck so she can’t get away.

Two cat’s fighting won’t go more than couple of minutes. If it goes then think they are in LOVE. Cat’s love is simply violent and don’t go closer to them.

If they were facing each other, looked fairly stiff, their tails were wagging, or they were arching their backs, it was probably a prelude to a fight. If they were preparing to mate, you would have seen the female turning her rear to your cat, holding the tail to one side and crouching down but putting her butt in the air. She would probably be treading or kneading her feet, too.
