How do Cats already know to use the litter box?

Britchi16 asked:

I know some cats have problems with this, but how is it that most cats already know to go to the litter box when they have to go?
My cat’s mom never taught him to go in the ltter box, so how did he already know to go in it?

Around four weeks of age, they will begin sand-scratching behavior. Initially, they follow the queen to the litter box and play in it. Gradually, by about six weeks of age, they learn to eliminate in the litter box. A cake pan with short sides that the kittens can climb over works well at this stage for a litter box. Kittens learn to bury their feces by watching the queen burying hers.

This is just nature for them. My cat had 4 lovely little kittens and always used the litter box. First mum “went” and the kittens were sat round waiting their turn. My dad said “isn’t that clever?” I said, “No dad, that’s nature, clever would be wiping their bottoms with toilet paper” It is born into them to dig and cover it.
