I used to feed them on a stand high enough that it won't allow cat to catch the birds. We also installed a collar on the leg of the plat form so that cats wont climb them. So every time he killed a bird I bathed the cat and put a large bell (aprx 5cm wide) on his collar. He didn't like as the bell dragged along the ground and rang.
