How do you keep a cat from going out the doggie door and leaving the backyard?

Waldo asked:

I have a cat and a dog, and both of them are inside animals. I want to get a doggie door so the dog can go in and out of the backyard, but I don’t want the cat to be able to get out and hop over the fence. He has his claws, but he’s never really been outside before. Is there any way I can keep him from getting out of the backyard?

They have doggie doors that only unlock for the animal that has the sensor on the dangly you put on their collar. This keeps strays from coming in as well as keeps out raccoons and possums who have learned what a dog door is. hudsongray

Also there are certain types of spray that cats hate, but the dogs will ignore. TheMechanic

Not really. I would stick to letting the dog out manually so the cat doesn’t use the doggy door. Even if you have the electronic door opener on the dog, the cat can easily go out the door as the dog is going out. Ocimom
