How do you stop your cats from using the basement as a litterbox?
I have two cats. They have a litterbox at the top of the basement stairs. One of our cats walks all the way downstairs to go in the basement, walking right by the litterbox. Our basement is not much of a basement. It takes in water sometimes so we don’t put anything down there. We tried putting bleach all over the floor, after cleaning up the feces. That did not work. The smell is leaching up into the house. I love the cat and don’t want to get rid of it but I need this to stop!

you should get sepperate litter boxes for your two cats because the one that is going in your basement miht not like goingin the same litter box with the other cat or you can take it to the vet to get it checked out

Keep the cat out of the basement. Or put a litter box in the basement. When a cat acts like that, he’s usually requesting a box in that particular location.

I had the same exact problem! Our cat would not use the pan in the laundry room, but would go on our carpet in the family room in the basement. The vet told me to remove the pan from the basement and have at least 2 pans for your cats. Some cats do not like sharing and will go other places. Cats are also, typically, uneasy with basements and will go in other spots to show their dislike/uneasiness. Once we moved the pans upstairs and shut the door, we never had another issue!

First you need to clean that area with bleach. The cat continues to smell his urine and thinks it’s OK to go there. Once you get rid of the smell, put the box down there on top of the spot he used to go. I had the same problem years ago and this is what I did and it worked. The bleach kill all bacteria left by the urine
