How to introduce a cat to a new baby?

Aaron asked:

I am about to have my first child and I want to make sure that my cat is introduced properly to her. What is the best way to go about introducing them before my baby is here? What about once there are both living together? The cat is a 3 year old cat who sometimes lives outside. I know he doesn’t like dogs very much who have come to visit.
We are having a home birth but the cat won’t be here for it. He will be returning after the baby is born.

We had the Pack n Play in our bedroom, the crib set up in the baby’s room, and some baby gear around the house so that the cat could explore it without the baby in it. I think that is an important step. Then when we came home from the hospital, we were very careful to keep an eye on the cat (plus give him lots of love) for the first few days. Honestly, it was less difficult than we thought. The cat would actually like to be in the same room as our son and watch over him, but if the baby woke up, the cat would come over to us and meow as if he were saying “please make that noise stop.” jkschmier

Um I really don’t think a cat is that big of an issue.
And how on earth would you introduce them before the baby was even there? That makes no sense.
Cat’s have minds of their own… they’re not like dogs. You don’t have to introduce a baby and a cat. The cat will walk up and smell the baby whenever it wants to. Mason Tyler born 9/9/09!!!

If you’re staying in a hospital for 2 days, have hubby take a used baby blanket home with him the first day to get the smell. You can record the baby’s cries or play youtube videos of babies crying so the cat hears it.

When you get home, let the cat sniff around the baby but be vigilant in case it looks like the cat will swat baby. Giving the cat extra attention so he doesn’t feel threatened or neglected is a good idea. Sublime_Savvy
