I agree, covering your sandbox with a lid or tarp would be a great idea.

There are such things as cat deterrents that you can possibly buy at a pet store. If not, they are available online. A really good one is called CatStop. It's just an ultrasonic device that you place in your yard and it should keep the cats away. AnswerGirl ₪ ø lll·o.

Your best bet is building a small easy to cover sand box to the side. cats can carry toxoplasmosis (worms) which spread very easily. it's fine to humans unless you are pregnant-then it is very unsafe for the unborn baby. Using rocks may be a better bet but grass is best. Good luck! Elizabeth F

When you say "surrounded by" do you mean you want to use sand as the ground cover under the swing set, like you see in parks? If so, I'd rethink. It's the perfect bathroom spot for any stray cats and you'd never be able to keep them out all the time. There are plenty of other surfaces to consider, if you don't just want grass. If you mean an actual self contained sand box, a cover is the best choice when it's not in use. Kanga_tush2

You'll just have to keep it covered when it's not being used and tell your kids if they see a cat in it to shoo it away. Give them some water pistols or spray bottles to keep the cats out. Paranormal Kitty

It's impossible. What you offer with a sandbox is the perfect litter box and every cat KNOWS this.

What they do on playground sandboxes is have a plastic cover that goes over the sandbox to protect it against contamination. Elaine M
