Having had cats and dogs all my life... this is just the way it goes and doesn't seem to do any of them lots of harm. If the kittens do start getting a bit of tummy trouble because they can't digest the food all we did is feed them separately away from the others - though this can be tricky! As for keeping the kittens out of the dog food.... other than feeding them in separate rooms and limiting their access... there's not much you can do. You COULD train them that when you make a specific sound it's feeding time and then remove the food 1/2 hour later so that they have to eat when it's time to eat, instead of leaving food out.... and put them in separate rooms to do that.... or you can accept that a bit of dog food won't hurt the kittens (as long as they're getting enough kitten food to get the taurine and other nutrients they need) and not worry about it too much.
