It’s two different plants. I found this out the other day when I was looking for a catnip plant for my kitties.

Cat nip = Nepeta cataria, catmint = N. faassenii. It’s tough for me to tell the difference but my cat knows. RScott

Definitely two different plants. Catnip is very attractive to Cats, so if you don’t want them in your garden I wouldn’t plant any catnip. On the other hand if you do want cats in your garden and like the catnip plant you may need to put a little fence around it - because the cats will eat it. I used to have a cat that slept in a catnip plant (until it was no more that is)..
Catnip can be bought in the form of sweeties for cats (they prefer it to choc drops generally speaking).
Hope this helps.
