My cat is kinda overweight, she’s about 4 and she weighs almost 20 pounds; she’s a fat cat. But anyways, is she going to have health problems from being so fat? Like, is she going to get diabetes or something? Oh, and please tell me how to get her to lose the weight?! I tried dieting her and she just got fatter then before! I don’t know what to do, i don’t want to lose my kitty to obesity =[ help?!

You need to go to: and read Dr. Jean Hovfe’s articles titled “The Right Weight Loss Program for Cats.” and “Feline Obesity”. There is also an excellent article on that at

Yes being overweight is unhealthy. It’s hard on their bones and joints and then they don’t want to be as active because it’s painful or tiring. And yes they can get diabetes or any other health problem related to obesity. To get her to lose weight you need to ONLY set out a certain amount of food each day and if your cat eats it all early in the day then don’t give her anymore. She will learn that she needs to space it out because you aren’t going to give her anymore. Obesity in animals is entirely an owners fault. I’m not saying you are a bad owner but I think you’re giving into your little kitties pleas for more and more food lol. Be strong and only give your cat the right amount of food for a day… I know you want your cat to live a long healthy life.

She can get health problems from being overweight. You have to get her on a highquality diet cat food sold through your vet. I have great success with my cat on medical weight control food. The most important thing with fat cats and diets is to make sure to taper off the food very gradually. If a fat cat goes a few days without eating it can develop fatty liver syndrome which is very serious. Copnsult your vet about how to best wean your kitty back to the idea amount of food.

Yes she’s likely to have health issues in the future if she doesn’t get slim. She’s at high risk from diabetes, and also likely to develop arthritis or heart problems when older. If she ever needs an anaesthetic or sedation for anything, overweight also makes this riskier.

What did you do before to try to diet her? Email me if you want help with this, I run weight clinics for animals and have lots of success stories so I’d be happy to help. You’ll find the type of food given is almost as important as the quantity given. A cat can easily get fat on even a relatively small amount of supermarket catfood, like Whiskas, Go-Cat or Fancy Feast, especially if it isn’t very active. Remember also that once a cat is fat, it doesn’t have to eat much to maintain that weight. I can help you choose a better diet and advise you on amount.

It would be very helpful also if you could send me pictures of the cat as I would be able to give a guide on how much weight she needs to lose.

take your cat to the vet to rule out a medical condition, the vet can also advise you on best way to get your cat to loose weight.

Diet foods are not the answer, in fact, many cats DO get fatter on Lite or Weight control formulas…

And yes, your cat is at risk for many more health conditions than if she were in shape, just as with humans.

Your cat needs a high quality food, not low quality diet food. And it needs fewer calories and hopefully more activity.
