How do I get my adult cat to go in the litter?

I have an adult male cat, approximately two years old.
I have an adult male cat, approximately two years old.
His father was a stray cat that had never encountered litter in his life and would always defecate outside of it. My cat adored his father, followed him everywhere and did everything he did. Including defecate right beside the litter!
I have tried all the corrective measures that all the supposed cat gurus told me. What I have achieved is that he will use the litter if I’m in the room (which I always praise him highly for), but not if he’s alone.
