Training my cat - how do I get him to roll over?
I have been training my ginger tomcat Jonathan for the last 4 months, and we’ve mastered all the basics: Sit, Lie Down, Stay, Wait, Heel, Beg etc etc. He even does tricks.
But he won’t roll over, not even for his favourite treat of Friskies.
Any hints, is there a physical reason why a cat is so stubborn?
And yes, he is toilet trained.
Jonathan is very trusting and rolls over to display his belly of his own accord, but not on command, which frustrates me.

Physically roll him over (playfully) and then reward him after the event. He’ll eventually catch on to the idea. Some cats have trust issues and hate being on their backs. Maybe this is why he won’t roll over.

you do realize this is a cat, not a dog…..the sit, stay and wait if you can get your cat to do that it is wonderful and good for the safety of your cat, so he doesn’t run out the door when you are leaving or something. that would be horrible if he got outside

lol, just remember he is a cat and not a dog, cats and dogs have very different personalities……
not that teaching a cat tricks isn’t bad, its just unusual.
i think, now, while he’s still young, teach him to use the toilet (yes, it is possible, my mum had a freind who did it. you just always need to leave the seat up, and then teach it to meow louldy when it has finnished so you can flush for it

Don’t blame him, what do you think he is a ‘dopey dod’???

Cats don’t train like dogs do. Rolling over is a submissive act cats do to display trust. If your cat trusts you he will roll over allowing you to rub his tummy. If not, an attempt at touching the belly could result in a nasty scratch for you.
