my cat will rub his nose on mine, or nose my cheek/chin if i'm laying down. i've given him little eskimo kisses since we got him at 8wks and he jumps up to give them now, i guess it's whatever form of affection you show towards your cat that it's used to. he understands when you cuddle him really close to cause he purrs louder. :]

Purring and headbutting / rubbing is the natural way for a cat to show affection.

My cat mirrors gestures that I make aswell, so if I squint my eyes at her, then she squints back. If I put my face to hers and kiss her little forehead, then she will put her face to mine and wipe her nose on my forehead (or sometimes lick me. ick)...

Yes, they understand. And my cat loves it! He likes to nuzzel our foreheads together. And he loves to kiss me on my neck, and I kiss him on his neck and forehead. When he gets a little "over" loving, he will give me a nip, like a love bite. They understand affection, praise, and nice soft voices.

I say give me a kiss and mine push their nose/forehead to my mouth they can not pucker though so its really just a trained behavior more for me than them. they rub on me when they are the ones seeking affection.

The closest thing to a cat kiss, is when they gently take a piece of human skin between their teeth and hold it for a few seconds. (This doesn't hurt, it feels like a gentle pinch).

Other signs of affection are rubbing up against your face, to exchange scent with you, as this reinforces the bond between you. Sometimes when you are sitting down, they will place one paw on your knee and the other on your cheek, to let you know they want to rub faces.

One of my favourites signs of affection is feather dancing. When a cat wants to let you know how happy it is to see you, they adopt the tail up posture, tail a-quiver and treading/dancing with the hind feet, trying to lift its rump higher. They may give a little chirp at the same time.

Keep your cat happy and they will find their own endearing way of showing you affection.

I tell my cats to "give me a kiss". I have cheek rubbers, head butters and a nose toucher. No real kisses. Of course they are independent creatures and will only do so if they feel like it.
Each cat shows affection different. One will insist on a tummy rub another will rub against me and want chin rubs. I have one that will get on my shoulders and wind around my neck, give me chin rubs and generally make a pain of herself.
I don't think they understand when you kiss them but they do understand affection

Both of my kittens do the following when they are being incredibly affectionate and want to show their appreciation in a kissy-way:
-Knead with their paws on mine or my husband's chests, legs, shoulders.
-Suck on our cheeks, arms, try to suck on our lips, and even my husband's nose.
-Bite - a gentle bite or sometimes a quick hard one, while purring, and licking you with their tongue. This is the best kind and this is considered a 'cat kiss'. If they are scratching you when they bite they are playing, but if they just walk up and suddenly nip you, are nip you when you are petting them and they are purring, it's considered to be a cat kiss.
