before you take the kittens to the humane society they have to be weaned. If the kittens are over 6 weeks of age then you can start weaning them. It sounds like they are already beginning to wean themselves. When you wean the kittens it is important not to stress them out. You should remove the mother cat, put her in a room with everything she needs for about a week or so, then before you let her back out have the kittens removed. If you just take the kittens it will stress them out because they are away from their mother and in a new environment and it will stress out the mother because she will be looking for her kittens but they wont be there. So if you take her and seperate her off, the kittens wont get overly stressed because their environment is still the same and the mother cat wont be stressed when she gets out of where you put her because she hasnt seen her kittens for a while.

8 weeks is the perfect age. Momma cat will be fine without her kittens. May look for them for a bit, but will get over it soon enough. She should be able to get spayed within the next week or two. Feel her stomach to see if her milk is mostly dried up or not, that's usually what the vet prefers.

You should wait as long as possible to reach 6-8 weeks, but if they start straying out, and possibly getting run over, get them out. As for when, try to take them when the momma has left them alone for a little while - but be prepared for momma to seem very confused and depressed for a while. As for spaying momma, call your local vet, tehy're beeter able to answer how soon after birth you need to wait.
