When cats walk slowly and stealthily are they stalking prey or in defensive mode against predators?

My cat walks that way in the house all the time. Also why do cats back away from you, roll over on their back and make you come to them to greet them by scratching their neck and stomach? And what does it mean when a cat closes it’s eyes when you scratch their neck.
My cat is an indoor cat.

Sounds like a stalking behavior. It can also be used for play as well.

Some cats back away, others will climb all over you. Depends on the cat.

A cat closing it’s eyes while being scratched probably means they’re really enjoying it.

    Good Luck. zuxende

It is predatoral. Cats like to skulk around the house in an “offense” kind of way. They are, after all, related to tigers, lions, etc. which are carnivorous cats. They also stalk their pray in that way. Edmund

Unless you have a serious mouse infestation in your house, there’s probably not much prey for them (although they will of course stalk spiders and insects too). And there are probably few, if any, eagles or foxes in your house, so they are not technically in “defensive mode” from larger predators either. They are simply being wary, which is good sense for anyone, especially an animal who has only been domesticated a short while (in evolutionary terms). And like ninjas (who got their start from observing cats), they are ready in a split second to either attack or defend, whichever is necessary.

The perfect soldier would be a lot like a cat (except that armies prefer obedient, interchangeable drones, and cats are nothing like that part)! CatsAreGods
