I disagree...most of the Q's about purebred dogs get answers to first try shelters and breed rescue organizations.

I do think that most people feel that there isn't much difference between the different breeds of cats. A cat is a cat. And I do not mean to anger anyone who has a love of a particular breed. But there really is much more difference between, say, a Jack Russell Terrier and a Mastiff, than there is between, say, a Scottish Fold and a British Shorthair.

It also seems that there are more kittens and cats euthanized at shelters, or running loose outdoors/strays/ferals than there are dogs. So it seems that there are always kittens somewhere. I know there are certainly plenty of puppies and dogs in the same situation. I don't know any statistics off the bat, but it just seems like cats are everywhere. It is so hard to find homes for even the kittens, let alone adult cats, so it just seems silly for someone to spend hundreds on a purebred cat. It just doesn't seem like there's much point to it. Whereas if you have a desire for a particular size of dog, or certain temperament, or if you need a dog for a job, you may need a certain breed that fits your requirements.
Again, not trying to be rude or upset anyone who loves certain breeds of cats, but I think that this is the way most people feel about the situation.
I personally advocate adopting a shelter animal whether you want a dog or cat or whatever, regardless of breed or mix.

I don't know where you are getting this. People who care about animals will tell you the same thing about both dogs and cats: There are billions of homeless animals out there, and every animal bred is one animal in a shelter who could have had that home and will now be killed. Breeders are either ignorant, greedy, or simply bad people. We don't need to bring even one more cat or dog into this world-- we already horribly overpopulated and millions die on the streets of starvation, disease, neglect, and cruelty. Most major breeds have rescue groups-- it is easy to find a purebred who is a rescue, if you absolutely must have a purebred. Shelter animals know you've saved their lives and they will never forget it. Why not give one a chance?

I pretty much stay in the cat section.

But I would give the same advice about all pets. And furthermore, I feel the same way about children. Adoption and giving out assistance - both of which should also start here at home - Or wherever your particular country would be, of course. Hope I didn't open a can worms.

Purebred cats are bred for looks, but lots of purebred dog have a purpose, like guarding and herding. Also, more cats are in shelters than dogs. I'm not a fan of breeding either pet but at least buying a purebred dog sometimes has somewhat of a reasoning.

I don't go in the dog section much...

The reason why people say to adopt a cat is bc there are MILLIONS of homeless cats out there are are being euthanized EVERY DAY!
You often can find purebreds in shelters.

Purebreds from reputable breeders are VERY expensive. For around $100-$150 you can get a pure breed @ the shelter, and that covers shots and spaying/neuter.

Also, alot of the breeders you might find are back yard breeders and chances are the mommy cat is being forced into having multiple litters a year so they can make money!

Actually you do see a lot of the same "go to a rescue or shelter" responses in the Dog section too. But maybe purebred cats get a bad rap. Seems there aren't too many "free puppies" around but the "free kittens" signs are everywhere. I know it took me 10 yrs to finally decide to spend the money for a pure bred Ragdoll Kitten. And I breed pure bred dogs. I will say of all the cats I've had in my life -- these Ragdolls are the greatest. Mine are now 10 and 7 yrs old and supposedly have a 20 to 25 yr life span. Worth every penny. Like purebred dogs, do your research and find a reputable show breeder.

I don't do that - I've always owned both mixes and purebred show cats. So I have no problem with those who want a purebred cat.

If they don't have something firm in mind, I'll suggest a mix. But if they are being specific about a breed, I'll help them out if I can.
