Why do my cats always lick each other then abruptly start biting / fighting?

It doesn’t matter if it’s the black and white licking the orange tabby or the tortoiseshell licking the black and white. First the cats lick each other lovingly, both seeming content, then in the blink of an eye it erupts into biting and hissing! Always!! What up with that?
All three cats are spayed. The fights can lead to scratched noses. Sometimes one cat will groom the other (no mutual grooming), and it still erupts into fights.

Well i think there are many reasons behind this and i think that the reason that your cats are behaving like that is very simple. It could be any of the reasons they all have an equal chance but lets just leave it at that for now hm? Nora

Nora what a completly worthless answer you just gave. Cats have an extremely short attention span so while their partners are licking ang grooming them they sometimes abruptly want it to be playtime, startling their partners causing them to hiss. rod l

Mutual grooming can be a way for cats to show dominance, it’s not always a kind and loving gesture. That seems to be what you’ve got going on right now - the one doing the grooming wants to show that they are the one in charge. The one being groomed responds by grooming back, and then the fight breaks out. As long as no blood is being shed, they’ll work it out. Are both of them spayed/neutered? If not, then that might help tremendously. J C

When I used to have more than one cat, they were the same. One minute they were being smoochy and nice to each other, then the next they would be fighting.

I can’t give an exact answer because I don’t know why they do it. As long as they’re not literally trying to kill each other, then I reckon that it’s all fine.

I guess you could say, it’s a cat thing? :) emzarr

Generally, this is because the cat has becomes hurt during the cleaning and blames it on the other cat, or he wants to go away but the cat continues to lick the other. Jimmy

Cat’s are insecure animals. They sound like they have issues. kierenis
