Why does my cat get mesmerized when he sees cats on TV?

Dave asked:

When my cat sees lions, tigers, and other cats on TV he gets completely mesmerized. Why is this? Is it the motion of the cats on TV? Can he actually make out the 3D bodies of the cats on TV? Is there an other explanation?

Also, does your cat do this?

Mine stares at the screen intently and sometimes lets out little cackles going “cack cack cack.”
I think it’s a bit more than curiosity because he only does it when he sees cats on TV.

My cats do this. Lol. It’s so cute. I love it. I think it’s because they recognize the movement of the cats. My cats will paw at the tv and meow a little bit. But no cackling. Lol. :-)

I had a cat who sat through a whole episode of Animal Cops once. There was a kitten in a drainpipe and she just watched the whole rescue! It was weird because she never did it again!

They are just curious, as to how, an animal or person, can be inside something like that, and if you want alittle laugh, my little dog, use to run around the tv set, looking for the people, she seen inside the tv screen, it was so cute.
